TREATING SPECIAL NEEDS PATIENTS
Thursday February 13th - 6:00 PM Via Zoom - 2 CE units
Have you been hesitant to treat special needs patients in your private practice? This incredible course will provide you with all the tips and tools to treat this wonderful population of folks with Intellectual or Development Disabilities (IDD).
According
to the United Nations' Factsheet on Persons with Disabilities, people
with disabilities represent approximately 15% of the world's population,
making them the world's largest minority group. Although the American
Dental Association (ADA) guarantees equal access to oral healthcare,
that access is disproportionately reduced for people with IDD, making it
one of the more significant problems that they face. Oral healthcare is
an important component of maintaining one's overall health and
well-being, so increasing awareness of this issue and inviting patients
with IDD into your practice is absolutely critical. Treating patients
with IDD is not as challenging as many providers fear, and the ADA's
Principles of Ethics and Code of Professional Conduct states that
“dentists shall not refuse to accept patients or deny service to
patients because of the patients …disability.”
Many
disabled patients have trouble finding quality dental care because some
dentists are hesitant to treat them. These members of the IDD community
are eager to find a dental home. Could that be your practice? Join us
to learn just how to reach and treat this vast patient base.
Participants will learn:
- Learning some basics of how we start the journey towards health equity in our dental practice for those with intellectual/developmental disabilities (IDD)
- Dispelling the myths and fears of treating those with IDD
- Reviewing minimally invasive approaches towards maximal rewards and joy in dentistry
